The Psywar

In a English Premier League there is a period of three months which will be vital for all clubs : December, January, February. In three months this game is so solid, which automatically have a large number of poins to grab, and therefore usually will be described a club which will be the champion or relegated.

In the three months that the fight is no longer solely in the field but in the head and heart. Upheaval in the head and the heart becomes more important because of what happened on the ground is often just a reflection of the upheaval earlier.

Consider how high the frequency of words excanging from a manager to another manager. Mutual attacks, mutual criticism, ridicule each other, degrading each other, and (actually) each to sow doubt in the mind of the opponent. Especially among rivals. Managers do it not just to plant doubt in the minds of other managers but also in the minds of opposing players.

Every managers have their own style to involve to that war (or psywar). Alex Ferguson is one of the hotshot manager for matters like this. One which always remembered was the 1995/1996 season when Manchester United competed with Newcastle.

Left behind 12 points in January, Ferguson lightly questioned the fighting spirit of EPL clubs if they were not play against MU. Some team called when it is they who will fight Newcastle in the competition continued.Team that was mentioned by Ferguson were preparing against Newcastle in next fixtures.

Kevin Keegan who was a manager of Newcastle, in an live interview on television was not able to control emotions when he was asked his respond about Ferguson charges. With red eyes, hoarseness angry, he swore would be very happy if Newcastle could beat MU.

What happened then, whether accidental or not, Newcastle's opponents played as crazy team, while Keegan was busy to recover his squad mentality. MU then became the champion. But make no mistake, Ferguson was not the only one, Jose Mourinho was great in psywar too.

When he first came to Chelsea in 2004 with confidence he crowned himself as The Special One. And when he repeated this statement again, in December. "I do not need to talk about achievement, because i have many and the team who hold by the 'Special One is always great."

That was arrogant but could made the confident increasing and made the enemy must admit. Arsene Wenger? Not much different. When the 2004/2005 season he saw Chelsea as the only one to fight for the league competitor. Manchester United and Liverpool was busy rebuilding their strength, so not at the top.

By December all of a sudden came accusations from Wenger that Mourinho obsessed to Arsenal's players. That issue actually triggered from the previous season with Ashley Cole's move to Chelsea was not smooth. And Wenger decided to use it as psywar when the competition entered to dense schedule of December, January, February.

Recriminations were finally happened. Mourinho accused Wenger were enamored with all things in Chelsea. They even threatened to bring that psywar case to the court. Wenger and Mourinho even had accumulated evidence of the opponent obsession in buying Chelsea and Arsenal players.

What happened next? None. Because it was happening as just psychological warfare to sow doubt in the mind, denying the opponent confidence. Who would not usually be strong, would collapsed.

And for this season now try to note what happened between Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger since December, lot of psywar. Also give the actual situation of which teams are competing strongly for the championship tittle.
